Sambalpur: The Sambalpur water supply project received a major push on Saturday as Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone for a large-scale initiative aimed at delivering 24-hour safe drinking water to the residents of Sambalpur city. The project marks a significant step towards strengthening urban infrastructure and improving public welfare, while addressing long-standing drinking water shortages that have affected the city, particularly during peak summer months.
With an estimated investment of Rs 451.24 crore, the initiative is expected to bring lasting relief to thousands of households by ensuring reliable access to clean and treated water directly through household taps.
Sambalpur Water Supply Project to Transform Urban Infrastructure
Under the ambitious plan, nearly 340 kilometres of water pipelines will be laid across Sambalpur city to strengthen the distribution network. The project also includes the construction of one intake well along with two state-of-the-art water treatment plants. Of these, a 65 million litres per day (MLD) treatment facility will cater to Sambalpur, while a separate 35 MLD plant will serve the neighbouring Burla area.
Once operational, the system will supply around 100 million litres of treated drinking water per day directly to households. Approximately five lakh residents living across 41 wards of Sambalpur city are expected to benefit, significantly improving water accessibility and reliability throughout the year.
Project Aims to End Summer Water Shortages
Addressing the media, Chief Minister Majhi said Sambalpur currently faces a daily shortfall of nearly 30 million litres of water, a situation that worsens during the summer season. He noted that the new infrastructure has been designed to permanently eliminate this gap and ensure uninterrupted access to clean and safe drinking water for all residents.

The Chief Minister emphasised that access to potable water is essential for healthy living and said the project would bring a qualitative improvement in the overall standard of life for the people of Sambalpur by removing dependence on alternate water sources and private filtration systems.
AMRUT 2.0 ‘Drink From Tap’ Programme Gets a Boost
The Sambalpur water supply project is being implemented under the Central Government’s AMRUT 2.0 mission as part of the “Drink From Tap” initiative. Under this programme, residents will be able to safely consume water directly from taps without the need for additional purification, ensuring both convenience and public health benefits.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra, former MLA Nauri Naik, District Collector Siddheshwar Baliram Bondar, and other senior officials.
