Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the flag flying high atop the historic Somnath Temple reflects India’s strength, capability and enduring spirit, sending a powerful message to the entire world. Speaking at the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, the Prime Minister emphasised that the occasion is not merely about recalling destruction from a thousand years ago, but about celebrating a millennium-long journey of resilience, existence and national pride.

He asserted that no matter how many attempts were made in history to weaken India or Somnath, both have stood firm and continue to stand tall as symbols of India’s unwavering spirit and civilisational continuity.

Somnath Swabhiman Parv Reflects a Thousand-Year Journey

Addressing a large public gathering at Sadbhavna Maidan after offering prayers at the sacred shrine, PM Modi said the atmosphere surrounding the celebrations was deeply spiritual and extraordinary. He described the divine setting of the temple, with the waves of the sea, the rays of the sun, the echo of sacred chants and the overwhelming devotion of Lord Somnath’s followers, as creating a truly grand and divine experience.

The Prime Minister said he felt fortunate to participate actively in the celebrations in his capacity as the President of the Somnath Mandir Trust. As he arrived to address the gathering, the crowd welcomed him with loud chants of “Modi-Modi,” reflecting the enthusiasm and emotional connect of the devotees present.

Grand Celebrations Mark Pride, Faith and Heritage

PM Modi highlighted the scale and spiritual depth of the celebrations, noting that 72 hours of continuous chanting of “Omkar” had been organised at the site. He also mentioned a series of events, including a drone display involving 1,000 drones, participation by 1,000 students from Vedic gurukuls, a visual presentation tracing 1,000 years of the Somnath Temple’s history, and the ‘Shaurya Yatra’ featuring 108 horses proceeding towards the temple.

He said the devotional chants, songs and cultural presentations created an atmosphere that was difficult to put into words, adding that only time itself could truly capture the magnitude of the experience. According to the Prime Minister, the event embodied dignity, pride and glory, while offering a profound spiritual experience filled with emotion, joy, closeness and the blessings of Lord Mahadev.

Somnath Swabhiman Parv Symbolises India’s Enduring Resilience

Referring to history, PM Modi said that foreign invaders a thousand years ago believed they had conquered India, but the flag rising high above the Somnath Mahadev Temple today demonstrates India’s strength and capability to the entire world. He described every corner of Prabhas Patan as a living testimony to courage, valour and heroism.

On the occasion of the Somnath Swabhiman Parv, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect Somnath and later contributed to rebuilding the temple. He said they dedicated everything to Mahadev, the Lord of all gods.

He further noted that Prabhas Patan is not only sacred to Lord Shiva but is also deeply connected to Lord Krishna, recalling that the Pandavas performed penance at this holy land during the Mahabharata era. The Prime Minister said the event was an opportunity to salute the many dimensions of India’s heritage.

Highlighting the temple’s legacy, PM Modi said Somnath represents 1,000 years of self-respect and resilience, as well as 75 years since its reconstruction in 1951. Drawing parallels between the journeys of India and Somnath, he said that just as repeated efforts were made to destroy the temple, similar attempts were made to weaken the nation yet neither Somnath nor India was ever destroyed.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister offered prayers at the Somnath Temple and performed ‘Abhishek’ and ‘Aarti’ amid Vedic chants, seeking the blessings of Lord Somnath.
