India celebrated a historic milestone as astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Lucknow welcome turned into a grand patriotic event on Monday. Group Captain Shukla, the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), received an emotional reception in his hometown, with thousands of citizens lining the streets to cheer him.
Returning from the US after outreach events and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shukla’s arrival in Lucknow was nothing short of spectacular. His family, friends, and admirers joined in a roadshow, marking his achievement as a proud chapter in India’s growing space ambitions.
Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Lucknow Welcome Draws Huge Crowds
The celebration began at the airport, where Shukla was received by his parents, wife Kamna, and young son Kiash. Crowds waving the tricolour greeted him with chants of “Vande Mataram” as drums and trumpets filled the air.

Students from City Montessori School (CMS), his alma mater, dressed as astronauts and planets, symbolising India’s space dreams. Despite light showers, supporters lined the streets, cheering as Shukla waved from an open-top vehicle wearing his Gaganyaan jacket emblazoned with the national flag and ISRO emblem.
Leaders Praise India’s Space Hero
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak hailed Shukla’s mission as a landmark for the nation, noting the state government’s strong support. He also confirmed that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would personally felicitate the astronaut later in the day.
Meanwhile, Lucknow city administration organised cleanliness drives and beautification works around his residence in Triveni Nagar. Large LED screens displayed mission highlights to engage citizens and spread awareness about India’s space achievements.
Mission Axiom 4: A Milestone for India’s Space Journey
Shubhanshu Shukla made history in June 2025 as part of the Axiom 4 mission to the ISS, marking India’s first human presence aboard the station. The mission is considered a stepping stone for the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, which aims to strengthen India’s role in global space exploration.

Nicknamed “Shux” by admirers, Shukla has become a source of inspiration for young space enthusiasts across the country. His achievement reflects India’s rising ambitions in science, technology, and international cooperation.
Celebrations Continue at City Montessori School
The festivities concluded with a grand cultural program at CMS’s Gomti Nagar branch. Teachers, students, and local citizens honoured Shukla, cementing his status as both Lucknow’s and India’s space icon.
Mayor Sushma Kharkwal announced that a park in the city will soon be named after him, ensuring his legacy inspires future generations.
