Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme Launched: CM Stalin Rolls Out ‘Ulagam Ungal Kayil’ for Government College Students

10 lakh laptops to be distributed in first phase to boost digital skills, employment, and inclusive growth

Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin is set to formally launch the Tamil Nadu free laptop scheme titled ‘Ulagam Ungal Kayil’ (The World in Your Hands) on Monday, marking a major step toward strengthening digital access for students enrolled in government colleges across multiple academic streams.

Under this ambitious initiative, laptops will be distributed in phases, with 10 lakh devices being handed out in the first stage. Although the state government had earlier announced a total distribution of 20 lakh laptops, the phased rollout is designed to ensure smooth implementation while maximising outreach. The programme is aimed at accelerating digital literacy, enhancing skill development, and preparing students for a technology-driven future.

Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme to Strengthen Digital Education

The laptops provided under the scheme have been procured from leading technology companies such as Dell, Acer, and HP. Each device comes equipped with modern specifications, including Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processors, 8 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD storage, ensuring students have access to reliable and efficient computing tools.

To support both academic and professional needs, the laptops will feature Windows 11 Home (Strategic) along with BOSS Linux pre-installed. Additionally, students will receive MS Office 365 and a six-month subscription to the AI-powered Perplexity Pro platform, enabling them to explore advanced learning resources and artificial intelligence tools from day one.

Skill Development, Employment, and Digital Empowerment

Beyond improving access to higher education, the free laptop initiative is designed to contribute directly to employment generation and broader socio-economic development. By facilitating digital skill acquisition, students will gain exposure to fields such as information technology, software development, data entry, digital marketing, graphic design, coding, web and app design, and the practical use of artificial intelligence tools.

The scheme also supports freelancing and self-employment opportunities, empowering students to participate actively in the digital economy. This approach aligns education with industry-relevant skills, helping learners transition more smoothly from classrooms to careers.

Tamil Nadu Free Laptop Scheme to Bridge the Digital Divide

The initiative is expected to play a critical role in narrowing the rural-urban digital divide by ensuring that students from all socio-economic backgrounds have access to modern technology. By improving digital inclusion, the scheme aims to raise household incomes, enhance employability, and encourage the growth of technology-driven enterprises across the state.

A Transformative Step in Tamil Nadu’s Digital Journey

Rooted in the principle of achieving social development through education and economic progress through technology, ‘Ulagam Ungal Kayil’ represents a transformative milestone in Tamil Nadu’s digital roadmap. The scheme reinforces the state government’s commitment to inclusive growth, knowledge empowerment, and long-term technological advancement.
