The Kerala Story not to be screened in Tamil Nadu

Published on

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Multiplex Association has announced that it will no longer screen The Kerala Story in the state beginning May 7. The announcement came in response to demonstrations by the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) calling for a halt to the controversial film’s theatrical screenings in Tamil Nadu. Even already scheduled events were apparently cancelled by multiplexes after the group announced its decision, fearing potential law and order issues if the screenings continued.

The Kerala Story, which was released on May 5, has been chastised for making misleading claims that thousands of Kerala women were forcibly converted to Islam and recruited to the terrorist organisation ISIS.

On May 6, members of the NTK party protested the showing of The Kerala Story in Chennai, Coimbatore, Vellore, and Puducherry. The protests were headed by party leader Seeman, who claimed that the video was created to insult Muslims and portray them as terrorists. Seeman told the media, “NTK members across Tamil Nadu will start purchasing tickets, entering the theatre, and protesting inside if the movie continues to be screened from tomorrow.”

In one such event in Puducherry, NTK members entered a theatre after purchasing film tickets and protested while the film was being exhibited, raising chants and holding up their party flags.

The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, opened in theatres on Friday and earned Rs 8.03 crore on its first day. The following day, the picture saw an almost 40% increase, grossing Rs 11.22 crore on Saturday. This brings the total for the two days to Rs 19.25 crore.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, The Kerala Story had a 36.13% overall occupancy in the Hindi market. While the Adah Sharma film was panned for claimed factual inaccuracies and earned negative reviews from reviewers, the stats reflect a different story.
