Trump Defends Tariffs After Court Setback, India Hit by Highest US Tariff Rates

US President Donald Trump has remained firm in his defense of tariffs despite a major legal setback, after a federal appeals court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize him to impose the so-called Liberation Day tariffs. The court declared these tariffs “invalid as contrary to law” but allowed them to remain in effect temporarily, pending an appeal to the US Supreme Court.

In a strongly worded post on Truth Social, Trump rejected the ruling and asserted, “ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN EFFECT! Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end.” He warned that removing tariffs would be “a total disaster for the country,” leaving the US financially weak.

Trump doubles down on US tariffs despite court ruling

Trump insisted that tariffs were necessary to counter enormous trade deficits and “unfair trade barriers” imposed by other countries, both allies and rivals. He emphasized that tariffs protect American farmers, manufacturers, and workers from exploitation in global markets.

“Tariffs are the best tool to help our workers and support companies that produce great ‘MADE IN AMERICA’ products,” Trump declared, urging citizens to stand firm as the case heads toward the Supreme Court.

Impact of US tariffs on Indian exports raises alarm

India is among the countries hardest hit by the US administration’s recent tariff escalation. The United States has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian exports, doubling the previous rate. This decision is reportedly linked to India’s continued oil trade with Russia, which Washington views as undermining global sanctions.

The new tariffs make Indian goods among the most heavily taxed in Asia, placing India alongside Brazil in facing the highest US tariff rates. Sectors such as textiles, footwear, and jewellery are expected to suffer the most, with rising concerns about job losses and a drop in global competitiveness.

US tariffs on Indian exports part of wider trade shift

The decision reflects a broader shift in US trade policy under Trump, targeting not only India but also other Asian economies like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Analysts warn that these measures could significantly disrupt global supply chains while increasing costs for US consumers.

For India, the steep hike in tariffs threatens to undermine export-driven industries that employ millions. Industry leaders have called for urgent diplomatic engagement to mitigate the impact.

Future of US-India trade ties uncertain amid tariff tensions

As the case moves to the Supreme Court, uncertainty looms large over the future of US tariff policies. Trump’s administration has positioned tariffs as a cornerstone of its economic strategy, while critics argue that such measures risk sparking trade wars and damaging long-term global partnerships.

For India, navigating these tariff hikes will be a key diplomatic challenge, especially as the country seeks to maintain its export competitiveness while managing geopolitical relations with both Washington and Moscow.
