Nisha Maharana Jatra Controversy: Audience Protest in Jatni Over Obscene Dance Allegations

Published on

Bhubaneswar: A late-night Jatra performance in Jatni, Bhubaneswar, turned chaotic on Friday after popular Jatra artist Nisha Maharana was targeted by irate spectators. The incident took place during a show by Parvati Gana Natya, where chairs were hurled onto the stage while she was performing.

The uproar began when a section of the audience accused Maharana of performing an obscene dance during the traditional theatre event. The sudden unrest forced the program to halt temporarily before the situation was brought under control.

Audience protest sparks Nisha Maharana Jatra controversy

According to eyewitness accounts, the Jatra was being staged at Parvati Chotra Yatra near Jatni Thana Chhak. Late at night, Nisha Maharana came on stage to perform a dance sequence. A group of spectators reportedly objected to the nature of her performance, branding it as inappropriate for the occasion.

The angered audience reacted by throwing chairs towards the stage, directly endangering the actress. This led to panic among both the performers and the viewers present in the pandal.

Obscene dance allegations lead to violent reaction

The protesting group alleged that Maharana’s item dance crossed cultural limits, prompting them to openly oppose it. While the Jatra stage is usually reserved for folk art and dramatic performances, the audience claimed the act was offensive and unsuitable for the traditional setting.

As tensions escalated, the show had to be stopped midway. The disruption highlighted the growing debate around obscenity in public performances and its acceptance in Odisha’s cultural events.

Committee and police step in to resolve the crisis

Organizers of the Jatra and local police personnel quickly intervened to calm the situation. They assured the angry spectators that necessary measures would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. After several minutes of persuasion, the show was allowed to continue.

Despite the protest, Nisha Maharana later resumed her performance, though the atmosphere in the pandal reportedly remained tense.

Debate over cultural sensitivity in Odisha Jatra shows

The incident has now raised larger questions about the changing nature of Jatra performances in Odisha. While some argue that introducing item dances adds entertainment value, others feel it disrespects the cultural and traditional essence of Jatra.

The Nisha Maharana Jatra controversy is expected to spark further debate among cultural circles, highlighting the need to balance tradition with modern entertainment trends.
