  • Donald Trump has pointed to India’s 2024 election while renewing his demand for stricter US voting rules.
  • His argument focuses on voter identification and India’s comparatively limited use of postal ballots.
  • The SAVE Act remains politically divisive in Washington, with Democrats opposing major provisions of the legislation.

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump has put India’s election system at the centre of his latest campaign for tighter voting regulations in the United States. By highlighting India’s massive 2024 Lok Sabha election and its voter identification framework, Trump is arguing that stronger safeguards can be implemented without preventing large numbers of people from participating.

The intervention comes as his administration continues to support the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE Act. The proposed legislation would introduce documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and establish additional identification requirements for federal elections.

Trump’s comparison has also opened a broader debate about the differences between the Indian and American electoral systems, particularly over how voters are identified and how postal ballots are used.

Trump India Election System Argument Centres on Voter ID

Trump referred to India’s 2024 general election in a post on Truth Social, citing the participation of more than 646 million voters and the relatively small share of ballots cast through the postal system.

He also referred to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an alleged discussion involving US officials about the use of photo identification during elections.

The White House has been presenting voter identification and citizenship verification as key components of its election integrity agenda. Supporters argue that stronger checks could improve confidence in the electoral process and help prevent voting by people who are not legally eligible.

India has become a useful comparison for the administration because of the scale of its elections and the extensive identification procedures used during polling.

Trump India Election System Comparison Draws Political Debate

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also backed Trump’s argument, highlighting the size of India’s electorate and the use of identification requirements.

However, the comparison has political limits. India and the United States operate under different constitutional and administrative structures, and election management is organised differently in the two countries.

The role of postal voting is another major distinction. India’s general voting process is primarily conducted through polling stations, while the US has a much larger and more varied system of absentee and mail voting, with rules differing across states.

That difference is central to Trump’s argument against what he considers excessive reliance on mail ballots.

SAVE Act Becomes Key Part of Trump’s Election Agenda

The SAVE Act would require individuals registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary evidence of US citizenship. It also proposes changes concerning voter identification, mail voting and the maintenance of voter registration lists.

Trump has repeatedly argued that such measures are necessary to protect election integrity. His administration has also pointed to countries including India and Brazil when discussing identification systems and election safeguards.

The administration’s position has included support for stronger verification procedures, voter verifiable paper records and additional scrutiny of absentee and mail ballots.

Critics, however, argue that stricter documentation requirements could create additional obstacles for eligible voters, particularly those who may have difficulty obtaining or presenting the required documents.

The legislation remains politically contentious in Congress. Democrats have strongly opposed several provisions, while divisions have also emerged within Republican ranks, leaving the bill’s legislative future uncertain.

Trump’s continued reference to India suggests that the country’s election system will remain part of his political messaging as he presses Congress to change US voting rules.

The broader issue is now bigger than a comparison between two electoral systems. It has become part of an American argument over voter access, election security, citizenship verification and the balance between preventing fraud and ensuring eligible citizens can vote.

For India, Trump’s comments place its election administration in an unusual international spotlight. The country’s ability to conduct a general election involving hundreds of millions of voters has become a reference point in an increasingly heated US debate over how elections should be conducted.
