Trump Urges NATO to Impose 50-100% Tariffs on China to Weaken Russia
US President Donald Trump has called on NATO to impose tariffs of 50-100% on China, arguing that such measures would weaken Beijing’s economic support for Russia and accelerate an end to the war in Ukraine.
In a letter to NATO allies on Saturday, Trump also urged member states to stop buying Russian oil and enforce unified sanctions against Moscow.
Sanctions and Oil Embargo Proposal
“I am ready to impose major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and when they stop buying oil from Russia,” Trump stated in a social media post.
He added that tariffs on China would be lifted once the Russia-Ukraine war ends, stressing that such a coordinated move could deliver a decisive blow to Moscow’s war machine.
China, India Among Top Buyers of Russian Oil
According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, NATO member Turkiye is the third-largest buyer of Russian oil, after China and India. Other NATO countries, including Hungary and Slovakia, also continue imports.
Trump has previously threatened secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil, including top buyers China and India, if NATO fails to act collectively.
Trump’s remarks come at a tense moment, following the flight of multiple Russian drones into Poland’s airspace, escalating fears of a wider conflict involving a NATO ally.
Last month, Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods over New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian oil. However, he has not yet taken similar action against China, despite Beijing being Moscow’s largest trading partner.
