A massive undersea earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast has prompted widespread tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean, with alerts issued for parts of the United States, Japan, and other coastal nations. The tremor, initially estimated at magnitude 8.0, was later upgraded to 8.7, and struck near Petropavlovsk in the Kamchatka Peninsula, according to official sources.
The Russia earthquake tsunami alert has put authorities on high alert in Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan, where waves as high as three metres (around 10 feet) are feared.

The US National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning System issued an urgent advisory for Hawaii, warning that a tsunami capable of causing serious coastal damage had been generated. “Immediate action is necessary to protect life and property,” the bulletin stated.
Similarly, Japan’s Meteorological Agency initially warned of one-metre waves, but soon revised the estimate to three metres, advising citizens to stay away from the coast and expect repeated wave strikes.
Epicentre Near Kamchatka Peninsula, Shallow Depth Raises Risk
The epicentre of the quake was located 136 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of just 19 km, making it a shallow earthquake—the kind more likely to generate tsunamis. Such shallow quakes (depths of less than 70 km) are especially dangerous in tectonically active zones like the Pacific Ring of Fire, where Japan is located.
Although Japan’s northern island Hokkaido is only around 250 km from the epicentre, tremors were barely felt, according to Japan’s NHK. So far, no damage has been reported from Kamchatka or affected regions.
Experts Warn: Stay Vigilant as Tsunami Waves May Hit Repeatedly
According to seismologist Shinichi Sakai from the University of Tokyo, shallow offshore quakes can cause far-reaching tsunamis. He emphasized that “waves may not arrive immediately but can strike in multiple phases.”
Residents across coastal areas in the Pacific region have been advised to monitor updates, avoid seafronts, and prepare for possible evacuations as part of the ongoing Russia earthquake tsunami alert.
