US Proposes 15% Tariff as Trade Talks Advance

Published on

Trade negotiations between the United States and several global partners gained momentum on Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced a new trade agreement with Japan, and China confirmed its vice premier will participate in bilateral talks next week.

US Plans 15% Tariff to Reduce Trade Deficit

In a bid to narrow the US trade deficit, President Trump reiterated his intention to impose 15% punitive tariffs on countries that do not reach trade agreements with Washington by August 1. The US is also pursuing a standardized tariff structure for most of its trading partners.

Five Trade Deals Already Announced

So far, the US has finalized trade agreements with:

  • Japan
  • Philippines
  • United Kingdom
  • Vietnam
  • Indonesia

However, talks are still ongoing with key trade partners including China, Canada, Mexico, and the European Union.

EU Scrutinizes Proposed US Tariff Plan

Several EU diplomats confirmed that the European Union is carefully examining the proposed 15% US tariff, with sector-specific exemptions still being discussed.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic was scheduled for a high-level call with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to further discuss the tariff terms.

US-China Talks Resume in Stockholm

Meanwhile, US and Chinese negotiators are preparing to meet in Stockholm next week ahead of the August 12 deadline set earlier this year. The meeting is expected to advance a potential bilateral trade deal, which has been a point of friction for both global powers.

As the August deadlines approach, the outcomes of these trade discussions could have significant implications for global markets, trade flows, and diplomatic relations.
