Kanpur: A shocking incident in Shyam Nagar has left a 21-year-old college student, Vaishnavi Sahu, with severe injuries after she was viciously attacked by three stray dogs while returning home from college.

The attack occurred near Mudhavan Park during a disturbance involving stray dogs and monkeys. Amid the chaos, the dogs lunged at Vaishnavi, a final-year BBA student at Allen House Ruma College, dragging her to the ground and mauling her face and body.

Student Undergoes Emergency Treatment

Vaishnavi sustained serious facial trauma, including multiple bite wounds. Doctors at Kanshiram Hospital treated her with 17 stitches on her cheek and nose.

“She cannot eat anything, nor move her mouth. Somehow, we are giving her liquids through a straw,” a family member revealed. Her right cheek was torn apart into two sections, while her nose and other areas also bore deep bite marks. Despite trying to escape, she was caught again and thrown to the ground by the dogs.

Locals Step In to Save Her Life

Hearing her desperate screams, local residents rushed to rescue her, armed with sticks to drive the animals away. By then, she was already covered in blood. Her family rushed her to hospital, where doctors confirmed the severity of her injuries.

Her uncle, Ashutosh, said, “Vaishnavi, the daughter of my late brother Virendra Swaroop Sahu, was returning from college when this terrifying incident happened.”

Fear Among Residents

Following the attack, fear has gripped the Shyam Nagar area. Locals say they are hesitant to step outdoors due to the presence of aggressive stray animals. Many are demanding immediate municipal action to curb the rising menace.

Family Demands Action on Stray Dogs

In an emotional appeal, Vaishnavi’s family urged the government to intervene:

“The government must do something about these dogs. Either catch them and take them away or keep them in shelters. They should be removed from the streets so that no one else’s daughter suffers like this.”

The incident has reignited debate around the Supreme Court’s ruling on sterilisation and relocation of stray dogs, with growing calls for strict implementation and urgent ground-level measures.

Current Condition

Vaishnavi’s condition remains delicate, especially in terms of mobility, eating, and emotional recovery. The family continues to pray for her healing while pressing for action to prevent such horrific attacks in the future.

On thursday Supreme Court modifies August 11 order saying stray dogs will released back to the same area after sterilisation and immunisation, except those infected with rabies or exhibiting aggressive behaviour.
