New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has underlined that demographic transformations in India’s border regions have a direct bearing on national security. Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) workshop in New Delhi, he said the government’s priority is to strengthen these frontier areas through development and welfare measures.
The Home Minister recalled that the Vibrant Villages Programme, initiated by the Modi government, was specifically designed to prevent outmigration from India’s sensitive border villages and ensure that residents enjoy 100 percent coverage of central and state government schemes. Shah emphasised that the initiative is also creating employment opportunities by developing infrastructure, preserving traditional culture, and promoting tourism in these regions.
Demographic Changes in Border Areas Impact Security
Highlighting the significance of the issue, Amit Shah stated that demographic changes in border areas directly impact the safety of India’s frontiers. He pointed out that the Vibrant Villages Programme is reversing the migration trend, and as a result, many villages in Arunachal Pradesh have witnessed population growth after its implementation.
Vibrant Villages Programme: A Three-Point Mission
Amit Shah said the programme is built on three strong pillars: stopping migration from border villages, ensuring every household receives full benefits of welfare schemes, and transforming villages into strongholds that can serve as tools of national security.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Culture in Border Villages
The government is focusing on building roads, communication facilities, housing, and social amenities in border belts. Alongside infrastructure, efforts are being made to preserve traditional cultural practices and promote local tourism, which, Shah noted, not only provides jobs but also strengthens the social fabric of these sensitive regions.
Vibrant Villages as Key to India’s Security Strategy
Shah reiterated that the identified villages under the Vibrant Villages Programme will, within a few years, become vital assets for India’s border management. “These villages will act as both cultural centers and strategic security points,” he said, stressing that development and security must go hand in hand in frontier areas.
