Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday described Chicago as the “world’s most criminal city” in terms of murders, sparking controversy over his remarks and signaling possible federal intervention in the city’s law enforcement.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote in capital letters: “CHICAGO IS THE MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!” He claimed that over the weekend, 54 people were shot and eight killed in Chicago, adding that the numbers were “similar” to the last two weekends.
Trump slams Chicago crime, targets Illinois Governor Pritzker
Trump criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, saying:
“Chicago is the worst and most dangerous city in the World, by far. Pritzker needs help badly, he just doesn’t know it yet. I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in DC. Chicago will be safe again, and soon.”
His comments come as the city grapples with persistent gun violence, raising tensions between federal and state authorities over policing strategies.
Federal agents and possible National Guard deployment
Earlier reports from CNN indicated that the Trump administration is preparing a large-scale federal operation in Chicago, possibly starting this week. Sources revealed that the plan may involve:
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents
- Border Patrol officers
- National Guard troops (potentially with armored vehicles)
The operation could be launched by Friday, focusing not just on immigration enforcement but also on crime control.
Governor Pritzker calls plan an “invasion”
