Ganesh Visarjan 2025: Tragedy Strikes in Maharashtra as 9 Drown, 12 Missing During Idol Immersion
The ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festivities concluded on Sunday with lakhs of devotees across Maharashtra bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha. However, the celebrations were marred by tragedy as at least nine people drowned and 12 others went missing during idol immersion rituals in various districts of the state, officials confirmed.
Incidents were reported from Thane, Pune, Nanded, Nashik, Jalgaon, Washim, Palghar, and Amravati districts, while neighbouring Madhya Pradesh also reported two teenage deaths during immersion.
Ganesh Visarjan 2025 Claims Lives in Pune and Nanded
In Pune district, five individuals lost their lives in separate immersion-related incidents.
- Two men were swept away in the Bhama river at Waki Khurd.
- One person drowned at Shell Pimpalgaon.
- Another slipped into a well at Birwadi village.
- A 45-year-old man was swept away at Khed.
Officials confirmed that three bodies were recovered.
In Nanded district, three people were swept away in the Gandegaon area. While one was rescued, search operations are ongoing for the other two.
Multiple Drowning Incidents in Nashik, Jalgaon, and Thane
Nashik district also witnessed tragedy, with five people swept away in rivers at Sinnar and Kalwan. Two bodies have been recovered, while efforts to trace the remaining victims are underway.
In Jalgaon, three individuals were swept away in separate incidents.
In Thane’s Shahapur taluka, three villagers — Datta Lote, Pratip Munde, and Kuldeep Jakare — were carried away by strong currents of the Bhargavi river after immersion. While the bodies of Lote and Munde have been recovered, the search for Jakare continues.
Ganesh Idol Immersion Accidents Reported in Palghar, Washim, Amravati, and Mumbai
In Palghar district, three men were swept away in a creek during immersion at Narangi jetty in Virar (West). Fortunately, they were rescued with the help of a Ro-Ro boat after maritime authorities were alerted.
In Washim, two people drowned, with one body recovered so far. A similar incident in Amravati left one man dead, his body later retrieved by disaster management personnel.
In Mumbai, where immersion processions often last for several hours, a man died of electrocution and five others were injured when a Ganesh idol accidentally touched a live electric wire on Khairani Road, Sakinaka.

Outside Maharashtra, two teenage boys drowned in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh after falling into a stream during idol immersion in Gatkheda village.
Rescue Teams Deployed Amid Heavy Rainfall
With continuous rainfall across Maharashtra, both the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in vulnerable districts to assist with rescue and recovery operations.
