TRAI Introduces CNAP: India’s Verified Caller ID System to Curb Scam and Spam Calls

Published on

India is set to roll out its own verified caller identification system, similar to Truecaller but backed by the government. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved the launch of the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature, aimed at enhancing communication security and transparency across the nation. Unlike third-party apps, CNAP will be integrated directly into telecom networks, ensuring that the caller’s name displayed during an incoming call is authentic and verified.

TRAI introduces CNAP for verified caller ID

Under the new framework, TRAI introduces CNAP for verified caller ID to help users identify callers by name instead of just numbers. The caller’s name will be fetched directly from telecom companies’ subscriber databases based on SIM registration and KYC verification. When a call is received, the system will automatically cross-match the number with this database, displaying the verified name on the receiver’s screen.

Privacy and user control in CNAP system

The CNAP service will be activated by default for all smartphone users in India. However, individuals can choose not to share their names if they prefer to remain anonymous or when contacting their telecom operators. TRAI has emphasized that strict data protection measures will be in place to safeguard user information while balancing transparency and privacy.

Expected benefits of TRAI’s CNAP system

The implementation of CNAP is expected to significantly reduce spam, scam, and fraudulent calls. By allowing users to view verified caller information, the system enhances trust and accountability in digital communication. CNAP will replace the existing Calling Line Identification (CLI) system, which currently only displays phone numbers without any identity verification.

Implementation and rollout plans

Telecom operators will create and manage Calling Name (CNAM) databases linking verified names with mobile numbers. The Department of Telecommunications has already conducted trials on select 4G and 5G networks, resolving technical issues before full-scale deployment. CNAP will be introduced as an add-on to existing telecom services once infrastructure upgrades are completed.

Experts believe the CNAP system represents a major leap forward for India’s telecom sector. It could become one of the world’s largest verified caller ID systems, reducing fraud and building greater digital trust among millions of users.
