DNA Confirms Identity of Red Fort Blast Suspect Dr Umar Nabi: Diaries Reveal ‘Operation’ Notes

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough in the Red Fort blast investigation, Delhi Police have confirmed through DNA testing that Dr Umar Nabi was the individual driving the car that exploded near the Red Fort Metro station on the evening of November 10, killing 12 people and injuring several others.

The identity confirmation came after forensic experts matched Nabi’s DNA with samples collected from his mother. Investigators had found a severed leg trapped between the car’s steering wheel and accelerator, indicating he was at the wheel when the vehicle detonated.

DNA Samples Confirm Driver’s Identity

According to Delhi Police officials, 21 biological samples were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination. “A total of 12 people died in the Red Fort blast, including the main suspect. The remaining samples were collected from the biological remains of other victims and nearby damaged vehicles, including cars and an e-rickshaw,” a senior officer said.

FSL experts confirmed that the DNA extracted from the leg matched the maternal DNA profile, verifying that the deceased driver was Dr Umar Nabi, who had earlier been linked to the vehicle seen traveling on the Mumbai Expressway and KMP Expressway before entering Delhi.

Explosive Evidence and ‘Operation’ Diaries Recovered

In a parallel development, investigators have recovered handwritten diaries and coded notebooks belonging to Dr Umar Nabi and Dr Mujammil from Al Falah University, where both were believed to have stayed prior to the blast.

Police said the first diary was seized from Umar’s room number 4, while another was found in room number 13, used by Dr Mujammil. A third diary was recovered from a nearby room — the same location where officials earlier discovered 360 kg of explosives during raids.

“The diaries contain repeated references to the word ‘Operation’ and several coded entries dated between November 8 and November 12,” a police source revealed, adding that the materials are being decoded by intelligence agencies.

Another Victim Succumbs to Injuries

Authorities have confirmed that another injured victim, Bilal, son of Ghulam Hasan, succumbed to his injuries at LNJP Hospital. Bilal, who was not a Delhi resident, was among those critically injured in the explosion. His post-mortem is scheduled for later today.

Meanwhile, police continue to recover human remains and debris from the vicinity, with parts found as far as 500 meters from the blast site, including a severed hand discovered atop a nearby market gate.

Probe Intensifies Into Possible Terror Links

Investigating agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police Special Cell, are closely examining Dr Nabi’s movements and communications in the days leading up to the explosion.

Officials suspect the blast was part of a larger terror conspiracy involving cross-border handlers and have not ruled out links to previously detected sleeper cells operating in northern India.

Forensic experts continue to analyze chemical traces, electronic devices, and documents seized from multiple locations in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, as the case broadens into one of the most significant terror investigations in recent years.
