Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday sharply responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark calling the Opposition’s demand for parliamentary debates a “drama.” She said that raising issues inside Parliament is fundamental to democratic functioning and argued that blocking meaningful discussions on matters affecting citizens is the true “drama.” Her comments came shortly after the Prime Minister delivered his address ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament.
Priyanka Gandhi Criticism Focuses on Purpose of Parliament
Speaking to reporters, the Wayanad MP stressed that Parliament exists to discuss urgent national concerns. She highlighted the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, rising pollution levels and the overall political climate as matters requiring immediate attention. She stated that debating such issues is a democratic responsibility, not theatrics, and accused the government of avoiding accountability by disallowing discussions.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi urged the Opposition to maintain constructive engagement during the 6th Session of the 18th Lok Sabha. He cautioned leaders against procedural disruptions and asked them not to be unsettled by recent election outcomes. Modi emphasised that Parliament should prioritise policy and delivery rather than slogans and confrontation, adding that positive thinking must guide nation-building.
PM Modi Calls for Cooperation and Legislative Focus
The Prime Minister lauded the high voter turnout in the Bihar elections, particularly the strong participation of women, describing it as evidence of India’s democratic strength. He said that while political differences may persist, parliamentary proceedings should centre on governance, not on emotional or slogan-driven disruptions.

The ongoing Winter Session is expected to be intense, as the government plans a strong legislative push to advance economic reforms. Ten major bills have been listed, including the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025 and the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025. With contentious issues likely to be raised by the Opposition, the session may witness sharp debates and potential standoffs.
