New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed heartfelt Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas greetings to Indians living across the world, emphasising that the global Indian community continues to act as a vital link between India and the international community. He underlined that members of the Indian diaspora have consistently contributed to the progress of their adopted countries while remaining deeply connected to their cultural and national roots.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said the Indian diaspora has enriched societies wherever it has settled and continues to play an important role in spreading India’s cultural values globally. He described overseas Indians as “Rashtradoots,” noting that they have helped popularise Indian culture worldwide, and added that the government has taken several initiatives to strengthen engagement with the diaspora.

Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Greetings Highlight Diaspora’s Global Role

Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is observed annually on January 9 to recognise and celebrate the immense contributions made by overseas Indians to India’s development and its standing on the global stage. The occasion serves as an important platform to acknowledge the role of the diaspora in advancing India’s interests across diverse sectors, including business, science, technology, culture and public service.

The day also reflects India’s ongoing efforts to maintain close ties with its citizens abroad, fostering collaboration and dialogue that support national development and international cooperation.

History and Evolution of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas

The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention was first launched in 2003 during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It was envisioned as a structured initiative to strengthen India’s engagement with overseas Indians and has since evolved into the flagship diaspora outreach programme of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Hosted in different cities across India, the convention’s rotating format highlights the country’s regional diversity, development achievements and cultural heritage. Since 2015, the event has been held as a biennial convention, with theme-based conferences organised in alternate years to promote focused discussions and meaningful participation.

Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Greetings and Prestigious Samman Award

One of the most significant features associated with Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, the highest civilian honour granted to Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin, and organisations led by them. The award recognises outstanding contributions towards enhancing India’s image abroad, supporting national causes and working for the welfare of Indian communities worldwide.

Conferred by the President of India, the award underscores the vital role played by the diaspora in strengthening India’s soft power and reinforcing its global influence. Through initiatives like Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, India continues to reaffirm its commitment to engaging with its global family.
