CJI UU Lalit recommended Justice DY Chandrachud as successor

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India -CJI UU Lalit has recommended Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor in the presence of all the judges in the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice of India, who retires on November 8, has handed over the letter of recommendation to the Union government. Also, The President of India will be advised by the Prime Minister before he names the next CJI. 

Notably, The Union Law ministry had written to the Chief Justice, requesting him to name his successor.

The appointment of the CJI is ruled not by laws laid out in the Constitution. The seniority principle, by which the senior-most judge becomes the CJI. Seniority is decided not by age, but by the date on which a judge is appointed to the SC.

Justice Chandrachud is the senior most judge in line after the CJI. He is set to be the 50th Chief Justice of India, would have a tenure of two years. He is due to retire on November 10, 2024.
