Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling his recent visit to Israel “shameful” amid the escalation of conflict following joint military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran.
Ramesh said the escalation was predictable given the visible military buildup in the region, accusing the Prime Minister of ignoring warning signs and proceeding with the visit at a moment of extreme regional volatility.
Congress alleges moral failure in foreign policy
In a strongly worded statement, Ramesh alleged that Prime Minister Modi displayed “the highest moral cowardice” by travelling to Israel just days before the strikes. He argued that the visit projected open political alignment at a time when tensions in West Asia were nearing a breaking point.
Ramesh further claimed that Modi publicly expressed solidarity with Israel during the visit and accepted an award, actions he said weakened India’s traditional diplomatic posture.

The criticism comes in the aftermath of coordinated Israeli and American strikes on Iranian targets, sharply escalating a confrontation rooted in long standing disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional influence.
Reports of explosions in Tehran and heightened military activity across the region have raised global concerns of a wider conflict, adding urgency to the political debate in New Delhi.
India’s balancing act under scrutiny
India has historically maintained close defence ties with Israel, long standing economic and civilisational relations with Iran, and a deepening strategic partnership with the United States.
Ramesh argued that openly siding with one camp during an active military escalation undermines India’s legacy of non alignment and strategic autonomy.
Political fallout likely to grow
The Congress party has repeatedly accused the Modi government of abandoning balanced engagement in West Asia. With the Israel Iran conflict intensifying, opposition leaders are expected to amplify pressure on the government over India’s foreign policy direction.
