  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • Indian Railways has approved Kavach deployment on 631 route kilometres of East Coast Railway.
  • The project will be implemented at a cost of Rs 270 crore across six railway sections.
  • Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the initiative will enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency.

BHUBANESWAR: The kavach east coast railway project has received a major boost with Indian Railways approving the deployment of the indigenous train protection system across 631 route kilometres of the East Coast Railway network. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the decision, describing it as a significant milestone for railway infrastructure and passenger safety in the state.

The project, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 270 crore, forms part of Indian Railways’ broader effort to modernise train operations and expand advanced safety systems across the country. Officials believe the technology will help reduce accident risks, improve punctuality and strengthen railway reliability.

Kavach East Coast Railway Project to Cover Six Key Routes

According to railway authorities, the approved work will cover six important sections under East Coast Railway. These include Baghuapal-Budhapank, Haridaspur-Paradeep, Khurda Road-Balangir, Naupada-Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road-Junagarh and Bobbili-Salur.

The deployment will be supported by an LTE-based communication backbone, allowing real-time monitoring and protection of train movements. As a crucial component of India’s railway modernisation strategy, the project aims to enhance operational safety across both passenger and freight corridors.

Chief Minister Majhi stated that Odisha, being a major part of the East Coast Railway network, will directly benefit from improved train operations, stronger safety standards and more dependable rail services.

Why Kavach East Coast Railway Matters for Odisha

Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. The technology is designed to prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), control over-speeding and avoid train collisions through automatic intervention whenever necessary.

The second-order impact of the project extends beyond safety improvements. Enhanced railway reliability can strengthen logistics networks, support industrial growth and improve passenger confidence in rail transport. Better connectivity may also contribute to regional economic development by facilitating smoother movement of goods and people.

Another important advantage is Kavach’s ability to assist train operations during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog. By improving visibility-independent train management, the system can help reduce delays and maintain service efficiency.

The project is expected to benefit key passenger and freight routes across Odisha and neighbouring regions while supporting Indian Railways’ larger mission of expanding advanced safety technologies on strategically important corridors nationwide.
