  KEY TAKEAWAYS:
  • BJD has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the alleged farmer suicide in Nuapada.
  • The party has demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation and a government job for a family member.
  • BJD alleges persistent issues in paddy procurement and farmer support systems.

BHUBANESWAR: The Nuapada farmer suicide case has intensified political debate in Odisha. After the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged death of a farmer in Nuapada district. The move comes amid growing concerns over agricultural distress and procurement-related grievances in western Odisha.

BJD president Naveen Patnaik directed the committee to immediately visit the affected area, interact with the bereaved family and gather ground-level information regarding the incident.

Nuapada Farmer Suicide Probe to Examine Ground Realities

The committee will be led by Prasanna Acharya and includes MLA Dibya Shankar Mishra, MLA Adhiraj Panigrahi, former minister Pushpendra Singhdeo and BJD’s Nuapada district president Avani Joshi.

According to party sources, the team will visit Jadamunda village under Komna block, where farmer Nepal Majhi allegedly died by suicide. Members of the panel are expected to meet family members, district officials and farmer organisations to assess the circumstances that may have contributed to the incident.

The BJD has demanded immediate financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the deceased farmer’s family and a government job for one eligible family member.

Why the Nuapada Farmer Suicide Issue Could Have Wider Impact

The incident has once again brought attention to the challenges faced by farmers in Odisha’s agrarian regions. The opposition party claims that despite assurances regarding Minimum Support Price (MSP) benefits and input subsidies, many farmers continue to struggle with procurement-related problems.

The second-order impact of the controversy could extend beyond Nuapada. If concerns regarding paddy procurement, farmer registration, token allocation and mandi operations remain unresolved, it may increase pressure on policymakers to revisit agricultural support mechanisms and procurement systems.

BJD Vice-President Sanjay Kumar Das Burma alleged that delays in paddy procurement, irregularities in registration processes and administrative inefficiencies have contributed to growing frustration among farmers. The party has also demanded immediate procurement of unsold paddy lying in mandis across western Odisha and an extension of the procurement period by 15 days.

The BJD has warned that if its demands are not addressed within seven days, it will launch a series of protests, including demonstrations at the Nuapada Collector’s office and broader agitation programmes across the region.

As the fact-finding committee begins its investigation, the findings are likely to shape the political and administrative response to one of the most sensitive rural issues currently facing Odisha.
