ANUGOLA: A 12 hour Anugola bandh over coal transportation disrupted normal life across Odisha’s Anugola district on Wednesday, with Congress workers shutting down commercial activity and staging picketing at several locations.

The district Congress unit called the shutdown over continuing concerns surrounding coal-laden trucks and the alleged arrest of five protesters from Kosala panchayat in cases the party described as false. Police were deployed in strength as authorities worked to prevent any major law and order situation.

Congress leaders claim that more than 2,000 coal-loaded trucks pass through several parts of the district every night, generally between 9 pm and 6 am.

The affected routes include Chhendipada, Kosala, Jarasingha, Anugola town, Turanga and Banarpal. Residents have alleged that the volume of heavy vehicle traffic has increased dust and noise pollution while contributing to congestion, road accidents and health-related concerns.
