Odisha Rainfall Warning: Bhubaneswar - Cuttack Yellow Warning Covers 16

Bhubaneswar/Anugola: Odisha is facing another spell of intense monsoon weather after a low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal near the northwest coast of West Bengal and Odisha at 5:30 am on Sunday. The system is expected to move northwards during the next 24 hours and could intensify further, driving the latest Odisha rainfall warning.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast rainfall across the state for the next three days. The heaviest conditions are currently expected in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, where an orange warning has been issued.

Between 8:30 am Sunday and 8:30 am Monday, some locations in the two districts recorded 12 to 20 cm of heavy to very heavy rainfall, signalling the potential for further disruption as the weather system develops.

Odisha Rainfall Warning Puts 2 Districts Under Orange Alert

Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj remain the main areas of concern under the orange warning. The intensity of rainfall could increase further as the low pressure system moves northwards.

Several other districts have been placed under a yellow warning for heavy rainfall. These include Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha and Puri.

Rainfall of around 7 to 11 cm is expected in these areas. The widespread nature of the forecast means that travel, drainage systems and low-lying areas could face additional pressure during periods of intense rain.

Odisha Rainfall Warning Includes Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

The weather system is also expected to generate thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of Odisha.

Wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are possible in many locations. The rainfall is forecast to become more intense between 8:30 am Monday and 8:30 am Tuesday, increasing the risk of waterlogging and localised disruption.

Residents in affected districts should monitor updated weather advisories, particularly during periods of thunderstorms and strong winds.

Odisha Coast Faces Rough Sea Conditions

The latest weather system is also creating concerns for marine activities along the Odisha coast.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha coast from August 16 to 18. The sea is expected to remain very rough during this period.

Fishermen who are already at sea have been advised to return to shore immediately. The warning reflects the potential for dangerous marine conditions as the low pressure system strengthens.
