- The US president says the war with Iran will end soon and promises American fuel prices will fall once military operations stop.
- Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh says lasting peace requires an end to fighting across the region, including Lebanon.
- Iran says it has proposed reopening the strategic shipping route within seven days, but the proposal does not confirm that normal shipping has resumed.
Kentucky: US President Donald Trump has predicted that the ongoing war with Iran will end “very quickly” and promised that American fuel prices will fall below pre-war levels once military operations stop. Speaking at a campaign rally in Kentucky on Saturday, Trump defended US military strikes against Iranian targets, saying they were necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
His remarks came as Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh called for an end to hostilities across the Middle East, including the conflict involving Israel and Lebanon. The contrasting statements highlight continuing differences between Washington and Tehran over the conditions required to end the wider regional conflict.
Trump Links End of Iran War to Lower Fuel Prices
Addressing supporters in Kentucky, Trump linked the duration of the conflict directly to energy costs in the United States.
“It’s going to end very quickly. When it ends, your gas prices are going to be lower than what they were before,” Trump said.
The president did not provide a specific timeline for ending military operations. His prediction also did not amount to an announcement of a ceasefire or a peace agreement.
Energy prices have become an important domestic issue for the US administration, as disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East can affect oil supplies, shipping costs and fuel markets.
Trump’s promise of lower petrol prices remains a forecast rather than a guaranteed outcome. Actual prices will depend on developments in the conflict, global oil supply, demand and other market conditions.
Trump Defends US Strikes on Iranian Nuclear Facilities
During the rally, Trump revisited previous US military strikes against Iranian targets, arguing that the operations had significantly damaged Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
He described the military action as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and rejected questions about whether the strikes had been worth their cost.
Trump maintained that preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon was a central national security objective.
The president’s remarks reflected the administration’s justification for its military campaign. However, his claims about the extent of damage to Iran’s nuclear programme should be distinguished from independently verified assessments of the programme’s current status.
The possibility of a negotiated settlement remains a separate question from the military damage Trump says has been inflicted.
Iran Says Peace Requires an End to Fighting on All Fronts
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh has stressed that lasting peace requires an end to fighting across the region rather than a limited cessation of hostilities in one area.
In an interview with Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen television network, reported by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Khatibzadeh said the conflict involving Israel and Lebanon was closely connected to the wider confrontation.
He said Lebanon had been among the issues discussed by Iran and the United States during negotiations associated with the Islamabad memorandum of understanding signed in June 2026.
Khatibzadeh also described his recent meetings in Beirut with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Foreign Ministry representatives as positive.
According to the Iranian official, diplomatic efforts must address the situation in both Iran and Lebanon to create conditions for a broader settlement.
Tehran Accuses Washington and Israel of Violating Understanding
Khatibzadeh accused the United States and Israel of violating the Islamabad understanding through military strikes against Iran and Lebanon.
He argued that Washington had a responsibility to restrain Israel and said efforts to secure a ceasefire and end the fighting in Lebanon had reached an impasse.
The Iranian deputy foreign minister also described the US military campaign against Iran as unlawful under international law. He said Tehran had retained its ability to defend itself and would continue protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
These statements represent Iran’s position in the conflict. Washington and Israel’s positions on the military campaign and the disputed interpretation of the agreement are separate matters.
Khatibzadeh further said Iran remained prepared to address questions from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United States concerning its nuclear programme, which Tehran maintains is peaceful.
He referred to previous IAEA reports as evidence of Iran’s compliance with its commitments. The current status of Iran’s nuclear activities and the outstanding verification questions would need to be assessed against the agency’s latest findings.
Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Within Seven Days
Khatibzadeh said Iran had proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, while emphasising that Tehran did not seek war but would respond to what it considered an imposed conflict.
The strait is a strategically important shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the wider Arabian Sea. It is a major corridor for international oil and gas shipments.
Any change in shipping access through the waterway could have implications for energy markets, maritime trade and the cost of transporting fuel.
However, the reported proposal should not be interpreted as confirmation that the strait has reopened or that commercial shipping has returned to normal. The implementation of any arrangement would depend on the terms agreed by the parties and developments on the ground.
