Shubman Gill Hits 208 in the opening One-Day International against New Zealand, Creates Record, India win

Published on

Hyderabad: Shubman Gill hits 208 off just 145 balls in the first One-Day International between India and New Zealand in Hyderabad on Wednesday. He became the fifth Indian cricketer ever to achieve the feat and his innings was decorated with 19 boundaries and 8 big sixes.

It was a near-perfect performance for the youngster, who looked completely in control against the New Zealand bowlers. He stitched together a solid 50-run partnership with Captain Rohit Sharma for the opening wicket and although Rohit was dismissed, Gill continued without any discomfort on the field with an even bounce.

Run scoring became easy as he crossed the 100-run mark and continued to struggle against almost all bowlers. He managed to bring up his 150 in 122 balls, and even though he continued to lose partners at the other end, Gill decided to adopt an aggressive stance that helped India get past 300.

The right-hander continued to play even as India lost two quick wickets in Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan. Gill was able to reach his third One-Day International century and in the process also became the fastest Indian cricketer to reach 1000 ODI runs, surpassing the likes of Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Notably, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan achieved this. He also became the youngest cricketer to score a double century in ODIs – a record previously held by Ishan.
