They stated in a united statement that they saw no value in a new edifice while the soul of democracy has been drained out.

The nineteen opposition parties boycotting the inauguration are the Congress, DMK, Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party, TMC, Janta Dal (United), Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), RJD, Indian Union Muslim League, National Conference, Communist Party of India, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Kerala Congress (Mani), Vidhuthalai Chirunthaigal Katchi

“Despite our belief that the government is threatening democracy, and our disapproval of the autocratic manner in which the new Parliament was built,” the opposition parties stated in a joint statement, “we were open to sinking our differences and marking this occasion.”

“However, Prime Minister Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new Parliament building by himself, “totally sidelining President Droupadi Murmu, is not only a grievous insult but a frontal assault on our democracy that necessitates a proportionate response,” the statement continued.

In its statement, the statement also mentioned Article 79 of the Constitution, which states, “There shall be a Parliament for the Union, consisting of the President and two Houses to be known respectively as the Council of States and the House of the People.”

Following an invitation from Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, PM Modi is to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28.

According to the opposition parties, the president is not only the Head of State in India, but also a member of Parliament because she summons, prorogues, and addresses it.
