New Delhi: Today marks the 6th anniversary of Chandrayaan-2, the Indian Space Research Organisation’s ambitious second lunar mission that launched on July 22, 2019, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
The mission aimed to study the Moon’s topography, mineral composition, seismography, and water molecule distribution, with special focus on the lunar south pole, a region of high scientific interest.
Orbiter Still Operational, Contributing to Global Lunar Science
Chandrayaan-2 consisted of three main components:
- Orbiter
- Lander (Vikram)
- Rover (Pragyan)
While the mission suffered a setback during the landing attempt on September 6, 2019, due to a software glitch that led to Vikram’s crash-landing, the orbiter has remained functional and continues to provide critical lunar data.
Equipped with eight scientific instruments, the orbiter has been mapping lunar surface features, analyzing mineral composition, and detecting water molecules in the polar regions. Its long-term operation has played a significant role in enriching global lunar science and has enabled open access to its data for researchers worldwide.
Chandrayaan-2: A Milestone in India’s Space Journey
Despite the partial success, Chandrayaan-2 stands as a monumental achievement for ISRO, reinforcing India’s reputation in the global space community. The mission paved the way for Chandrayaan-3, which later succeeded in achieving a soft landing on the Moon’s south pole, further cementing ISRO’s capabilities in space exploration.
“Chandrayaan-2 has been a cornerstone mission that continues to inspire and empower future generations of Indian scientists and engineers,” said an ISRO official on the anniversary.
As ISRO continues its journey with new missions including Gaganyaan and Aditya-L1, Chandrayaan-2 remains a symbol of resilience, innovation, and scientific excellence in India’s space narrative.
