6-Foot Crocodile Rescued from Village Pond in Kendrapara
Kendrapara: A 6-foot-long female crocodile strayed into a village pond in Endulapur village under Rajnagar Forest Division in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, prompting swift action by the Forest Department on Saturday.
Crocodile Sighting Sparks Concern
The reptile was discovered floating in the pond by a local resident after floodwaters breached natural habitats near the Bhitarakanika National Park. The sudden rise in water levels due to heavy monsoon rains is believed to have caused the crocodile to drift away from its natural territory.
Forest Team Executes Safe Rescue
A five-member rescue team, led by Forest Guard Bijay Patra, arrived promptly on the scene and safely captured the crocodile using fishing nets, ensuring no harm came to either the animal or the villagers.
The rescued crocodile was later released into a creek connected to Bhitarakanika National Park, restoring it to its natural habitat.
Cause and Caution
Forest officials suspect that the crocodile likely wandered into the village pond from the Hansua River or nearby tidal creeks, which are connected to the Bhitarakanika sanctuary and are known crocodile habitats. The ongoing flooding and rising river levels have increased such incidents, and the department has urged locals to remain alert and report any sightings immediately.
