NISAR Satellite Launch on July 30: A New Milestone in NASA-ISRO Space Collaboration

Published on

New Delhi: In a significant step forward in international space cooperation, India and the United States are all set to launch the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite from Sriharikota on July 30. The mission marks a major leap in bilateral collaboration between two of the world’s leading space agencies — ISRO and NASA.

What is NISAR?

NISAR is a joint satellite project aimed at observing Earth’s land and ice surfaces with unprecedented accuracy. The satellite is designed to provide valuable data for:

  • Disaster response and management
  • Climate change and glacier monitoring
  • Agricultural planning
  • Natural resource mapping

Mission Highlights

  • Launch Date: July 30, 2025
  • Launch Site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota
  • Orbit: Sun-synchronous, with repeat global coverage every 12 days
  • Weight: 2,392 kg

Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh said the NISAR mission is a “symbol of democratic scientific collaboration”, enhancing India’s reputation as a ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ (global partner). He added:

“This mission will serve not only India and the US but also countries across the globe, especially in the areas of disaster management, agriculture, and climate resilience.”

NISAR is the first satellite mission using dual-frequency radar (L-band and S-band) to measure changes in Earth’s surface, making it highly valuable for tracking natural disasters, soil moisture, forest biomass, and ice-sheet dynamics. The global imaging every 12 days ensures real-time environmental monitoring.
