DRI to celebrate 65th Founding Day tomorrow

New Delhi: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) this year on 5-6 December 2022 celebrates its 65th foundation day. Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman will inaugurate the two-day event along with Union Finance Minister Shri Pankaj Chaudhary.

DRI is the premier intelligence and enforcement agency in anti-smuggling matters under the auspices of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Government of India. It was established on 4 December 1957. Headquartered in New Delhi, DRI has 12 zonal units, 35 regional units and 15 sub-regional units with a workforce of about 800 officials.

With its presence in India and abroad, DRI has been fulfilling its mandate of prevention and detection of smuggling of narcotic and psychotropic substances, gold, diamonds, precious metals, wildlife items, cigarettes, arms, ammunition and explosives, counterfeit notes, foreign currencies, SCOMET items, hazardous and environmentally sensitive materials, antiquities, etc. and taking punitive measures against organized crime groups involved in them. DRI is also involved in detecting trade fraud and duty evasion.

DRI is also at the forefront of international customs cooperation under mutual customs assistance agreements signed with various countries, where the emphasis is on information exchange and learning from the best practices of other customs administrations.

Accordingly, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI takes the opportunity of its establishment and organizes Regional Customs Entities Meeting (RCEM) for effective cooperation with partner customs organizations and international agencies like World Customs Organization, INTERPOL for enforcement related issues. This year, 22 customs administrations covering the Asia-Pacific region participated, along with international organizations such as the World Customs Organization (WCO), Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Regional Intelligence Liaison Office – Asia and the Pacific (RILO AP ). invited to the event.

The Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister will release the current edition of the ‘Smuggling in India Report 2021-22′ on the occasion. The report brings together anti-smuggling and commercial fraud trends and DRI’s performance and experience over the last financial year.

DRI Day serves as a day to honor and recognize past achievements, a day of motivation for young CBIC and DRI officers and also offers an opportunity to interact and engage with customs administrations of regional countries and important regional trading partners, thereby enhancing India’s role in customs related matters in region.
