Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has allegedly issued a direct nuclear threat against India while speaking in the United States, warning that Islamabad would “take half the world down” if faced with an existential threat from New Delhi.
Speaking at a black-tie dinner in Tampa hosted by businessman and honorary consul Adnan Asad, Munir declared, “We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us.” This is reportedly the first time such a nuclear warning has been made from US territory against a third country.
Munir’s comments come shortly after his rare five-day US trip in June, during which he met former US President Donald Trump and discussed enhancing US-Pakistan cooperation, including an oil deal. The visit also followed praise from a US general, who called Pakistan a “phenomenal partner” in counterterrorism.
Asim Munir Nuclear Threat Targets India Over Indus River Dispute
On his second US visit in two months, Munir also took aim at India over the control of the Indus River. “We will wait for India to build a dam, and when it does so, we will destroy it with ten missiles,” he said, stressing that Pakistan had “no shortage of missiles, Alhumdulillah.”
Munir drew an unusual comparison between the two nations, saying: “India is a shining Mercedes coming on a highway like a Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of gravel. If the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser?”
He further accused India of promoting itself as a global leader while being “far from it,” citing the killing of a Sikh leader in Canada, the detention of Indian naval officers in Qatar, and the Kulbhushan Jadhav case as alleged proof of India’s involvement in terrorism abroad.
Diplomatic Push Amid Asim Munir Nuclear Threat Remarks
During his Florida trip, Munir engaged with US political and military leaders, as well as members of the Pakistani diaspora. He attended the Retirement Ceremony of outgoing US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander General Michael Kurilla and the Change of Command Ceremony for Admiral Brad Cooper, the new CENTCOM chief.
Munir praised Kurilla’s role in strengthening US-Pakistan military relations and expressed hope for continued cooperation under Cooper. He also invited Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, to visit Pakistan, while meeting defence leaders from allied nations.
