19th-Century Sikh-Era Fort Reopens for Heritage Tourism

In a historic move, the Indian Army’s Golden Arrow Division has opened the iconic Ferozepur Fort in Punjab to the public after nearly two centuries. The fort, a relic of 19th-century military architecture from the Sikh Empire, was officially opened by Maj. Gen. RS Manral, General Officer Commanding, Golden Arrow Division.

Strategic Legacy and Architectural Significance

Situated near the Indo-Pakistan border, Ferozepur Fort is known for its distinct hexagonal design and formidable defensive structures, reflecting the strategic acumen of the Sikh military architects. It once served as a critical outpost in the frontier defence system of the Sikh Raj.

Symbol of Resistance and National Pride

The fort has deep historical roots, with significant connections to the First War of Independence in 1857. Its reopening aims to reconnect citizens with India’s rich legacy of valour and resistance, and to foster a sense of national pride.

Boost to Tourism, Research, and Cultural Heritage

By opening the fort, the Army reinforces its commitment to linking local communities with India’s cultural and military heritage. The site is expected to attract researchers, historians, and tourists, contributing to heritage tourism and academic exploration in the region.
