Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Crime Branch on Monday arrested the prime accused in the high-profile Balianta murder case that triggered statewide outrage earlier this month.
The accused, identified as Binod Kumar Behera, was allegedly involved in the brutal assault that led to the death of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain in the Bhingarpur-Kaja area under Balianta police limits.
Officials described the arrest as a major breakthrough in the ongoing investigation.
Balianta Murder Case Arrest Made From Kendrapara
According to Crime Branch officials, the accused was apprehended from Indupur in Kendrapara district on the night of May 25.
The arrested accused has been identified as:
- Binod Kumar Behera, 48
- Son of Rama Chandra Behera
- Resident of Satya Nagar, Bhubaneswar
Police said substantial evidence collected during the investigation linked him directly to the fatal assault on the victim.
The second-order effect of the swift arrests in the case could strengthen public confidence in high-profile criminal investigations while also increasing pressure on law enforcement agencies to deliver faster justice in violent crime cases.
GRP Constable Murder Shocked Odisha
The case relates to the murder of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain following a violent assault on May 7, 2026, in the Bhingarpur-Kaja area.
The incident sparked widespread outrage across Odisha due to the brutality involved and the alleged participation of multiple accused persons.
The case was initially registered at:
- Balianta Police Station
- Case No. 221/2026
It was later transferred to the Crime Branch under:
- CID CB PS Case No. 06/2026
- Charges Filed Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The accused have been booked under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to murder and associated offences.
Crime Branch officials confirmed that Binod Kumar Behera allegedly played a direct role in the assault on the deceased constable.
With the latest arrest, the total number of accused detained in the case has risen to 16.
Investigation Continues to Trace Remaining Accused
The Crime Branch said investigation teams are continuing efforts to identify and arrest remaining individuals linked to the incident.
Officials stated that:
- Multiple teams are conducting raids
- Evidence collection is ongoing
- Additional accused may be arrested soon
