Bhubaneswar to Host India’s First National Indoor Athletics Championships in January 2026

Published on

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark decision for Indian sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced that Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium will host the first-ever National Indoor Athletics Championships in January 2026. The introduction of indoor athletics represents a major step toward modernizing the country’s sports infrastructure and expanding opportunities for athletes to compete under global standards.

Kalinga Stadium to Host National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026

AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo confirmed that the indoor competition will be included in the 2026 domestic athletics calendar. The event will feature specialized indoor disciplines such as the pole vault and heptathlon, signaling India’s growing readiness to align with international athletics formats.

Bhubaneswar’s state-of-the-art indoor facility at Kalinga Stadium will serve as the venue, solidifying the city’s reputation as India’s premier sports destination.

Heptathlon and Pole Vault to Debut in Indian Athletics

The men’s indoor heptathlon, spanning two days, will include seven events — 60m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000m run. AFI’s decision to introduce these events aims to prepare Indian athletes for global competitions such as the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2028, for which India has already placed a bid.

This inclusion underscores AFI’s commitment to helping athletes gain exposure to new formats and conditions that mirror international standards.

AFI’s 2026 Domestic Calendar and Regional Development Plans

The 2026 domestic athletics season will feature nearly 40 events across India, encompassing both regional and national meets. The objective is to enhance participation, provide structured competition, and build a clear pathway from grassroots to elite levels.

AFI also plans to strengthen regional athletics infrastructure by increasing competitions in the South and North Zones. Over 15 venues, including the Anju Bobby Sports Foundation in Bengaluru, have been shortlisted to promote localized training and reduce travel constraints for athletes.

A New Era for Indian Athletics

The National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 marks a pivotal step in India’s sporting evolution. With the support of modern facilities like Kalinga Stadium and a well-structured domestic circuit, India is moving closer to producing athletes capable of excelling in global indoor events. The initiative reflects AFI’s long-term vision to nurture world-class talent and elevate Indian athletics to international prominence.
