Brazil Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 8, Injures 13 in Santa Catarina

Published on

At least eight people were killed and 13 others injured after a hot-air balloon caught fire and crashed on Saturday morning in Praia Grande, a well-known tourist destination in southern Brazil’s Santa Catarina state.

According to officials, the crash occurred as part of the region’s June festival celebrations, which are known for increased aerial tourism. Video footage, shared by local news outlet G1, captured the balloon in a fireball descent, trailing thick black smoke before hitting the ground.

Governor Reacts, Survivors in Hospital

Santa Catarina’s Governor Jorginho Mello confirmed the incident on social media platform X, stating:

“Our teams continue to provide all necessary support to families and victims. We continue to monitor the situation.”

The state military fire brigade said 13 survivors, including the pilot, were rushed to nearby hospitals. Details on their medical conditions have not yet been released.

Authorities are now investigating whether operational negligence, technical failure, or adverse weather conditions contributed to the fire. The crash has raised serious alarms about the safety of hot-air balloon operations, especially during the June festivities, which see a significant uptick in balloon flights.

This deadly incident follows closely on the heels of a similar balloon crash in São Paulo, where one woman died and 11 were injured. The back-to-back accidents are intensifying public and regulatory scrutiny of ballooning tours across Brazil.
