China on High Alert as Typhoon Kajiki Nears Hainan, Emergency Response Activated

Beijing: Chinese emergency services have been placed on high alert as Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th typhoon of the year, advances toward Hainan Province. The Ministry of Emergency Management announced on Saturday that a Level-IV emergency response has been activated to tackle potential flooding and storm damage.

Typhoon Kajiki’s Path and Intensity

As of 11 am Saturday, the storm’s center was located about 650 km east of Sanya City over the sea. Meteorological authorities forecast the typhoon to move westward at speeds of up to 25 km/h, while its intensity is expected to strengthen significantly.

The National Meteorological Centre of China has issued a yellow alert, warning that the typhoon is likely to make landfall or pass near the southern coast of Hainan Island by Sunday evening. Heavy to torrential rainfall is forecast across Hainan Island, as well as the Xisha and Zhongsha Islands, from Saturday through Sunday.

Emergency Preparations in Place

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has dispatched a work team to Hainan to support local disaster prevention and relief efforts. China operates a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe, and a four-tier weather warning system, where red indicates the most serious threat, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.

Authorities have urged coastal residents to prepare for possible flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions. Fishing vessels have been advised to take shelter, while local governments are identifying at-risk areas for potential evacuations and resettlement.

Recent Typhoon Activity in China

China has faced a series of storms this year:

  • Typhoon Podul (August 13) – made landfall in Taiwan’s Taitung County, bringing severe storms to Hualien and Taitung.
  • Typhoon Co-May (July 30) – struck Shanghai’s Fengxian District with winds of 23 m/s and pressure of 978 hPa, prompting the evacuation of 15,172 residents and deployment of 918 emergency rescue teams.

With Typhoon Kajiki strengthening, Hainan Province is bracing for potentially severe impacts in the coming 48 hours.
