Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025: Ajaya Babu Wins Gold, Harjinder Kaur Claims Bronze

Published on

India’s weightlifting contingent continued its impressive run at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Ajaya Babu Valluri clinched the gold medal in the men’s 79kg category, while Harjinder Kaur secured bronze in the women’s 69kg division, further boosting India’s medal tally.

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025: Ajaya Babu lifts gold with 335kg total

Ajaya Babu produced a stellar performance, lifting a combined total of 335kg (152kg snatch + 183kg clean and jerk) to claim the top spot. He narrowly edged past Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry, who managed 333kg (150kg + 183kg), while Nigeria’s Adedapo Adeleke settled for bronze with 306kg (141kg + 165kg).

The victory not only earned Ajaya Babu the gold medal but also secured him automatic qualification for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, as winners in each senior category receive direct entry.

Ajaya Babu’s steady comeback after shaky start

The Indian lifter endured a nervous start, failing in his opening snatch attempt at 148kg. However, he regained composure to clear the same weight on his second attempt and raised the bar to 152kg on his third, giving him the lead.

Ajaya excelled in the clean and jerk segment, recording three successful lifts—176kg, 180kg, and finally 183kg—to seal the gold medal with authority.

Harjinder Kaur shows resilience to claim bronze

In the women’s 69kg final, Harjinder Kaur battled through early setbacks to clinch the bronze medal with a total of 222kg (99kg snatch + 123kg clean and jerk). After missing her opening attempt at 95kg, she steadied herself to clear it on the second try, later completing 99kg in her third attempt.

In clean and jerk, Harjinder initially failed at 123kg but came back strong on her second attempt before narrowly missing 128kg. Nigeria’s Islamiyat Adebukola secured gold with 236kg (105kg + 131kg), while New Zealand’s Olivia Selemaia claimed silver with 223kg (100kg + 123kg).

India’s strong campaign continues in Ahmedabad

This is the 30th edition of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, featuring over 300 athletes from 31 countries. India’s campaign began on a winning note when Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu secured gold in the women’s 48kg category earlier this week, also booking her ticket to Glasgow 2026.

With Ajaya Babu’s gold and Harjinder Kaur’s bronze, India continues to showcase its rising dominance in weightlifting at the continental stage.
