Congress’s ‘Vidhan Sabha’ Gherao, 80 platoons of police for full security

Bhubaneswar: The Congress party plans to ‘Vidhan Sabha’ Gherao, the Odisha State Assembly today in protest of claimed increased violence against women and crimes against children. Following a night-long sit-in protest that began on Tuesday, the party has scheduled a rally outside the assembly today, with its workers anticipated to march in protest and lay siege to the legislative grounds.

In light of the law and order situation, the Commissionerate Police have sent 80 platoon officers to provide complete protection during the gherao. All security measures have been increased to prevent any unwanted incidents.

Congress’s ‘Vidhan Sabha’ Gherao

The protest comes a day after all 14 Congress MLAs were suspended for a week owing to unruly behavior in the House. Following the suspension, Congress members battled with police in front of the legislature, raising political tensions in the state. The Congress, which calls the suspensions undemocratic, has promised to escalate its protests with today’s gherao.

In an interview with the media, OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das stated that the administration had violated democracy by using illegal police force against Congress MLAs who held the Mohan Majhi-led government accountable for escalating crimes and atrocities against women in the state.

“The CM himself stated in the state assembly that 1600 cases of women’s atrocities have been lodged so far under his tenure. He had replied to a question stating that more than 40,000 women and children have gone missing ever since he took charge. We are protesting to demand accountability on this,” he added.

BJP Claims Opposition Disruption Attempts

Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accuses the opposition of seeking to disrupt assembly sessions.

Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan accused the Congress of disruptive behavior in the Legislative Assembly, claiming that their activities constituted “goondaraj.” He stated that their conduct, which included using abusive language, behaving inappropriately, and causing disruptions with gongs, drums, and trumpets during proceedings, was not only unparliamentary but also a serious violation.

Meanwhile, the state assembly has been operating without opposition representation, and the situation is set to continue today. While the Congress protests against the government outside, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) stays active inside the House.

The agenda for today’s session includes question and answer sessions for the Water Resources, Revenue, and Commerce departments.
