New Delhi: On the occasion of the 19th Foundation Day of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh unveiled 14 new scientific products and initiatives developed by affiliated institutions under the Ministry. These innovations span crucial sectors like weather forecasting, agriculture, marine science, and environmental monitoring.

Key Innovations Unveiled by the Ministry

The newly launched products include:

  • Rainfall monitoring systems and crop-weather calendars
  • High-resolution rainfall datasets
  • Updated wave atlases and seabed charts
  • Air quality forecasting models
  • Seismic microzonation studies for four Indian cities
  • Marine biodiversity reports
  • Advanced weather forecasting systems

These tools are expected to enhance disaster preparedness, support sustainable agriculture, and improve marine safety and air quality management.

Empowering Citizens Through Science and Innovation

Speaking at the Foundation Day celebrations in New Delhi, Dr Singh emphasized the growing relevance of science-driven public services. He noted that India’s scientific advancements have now made it possible for everyday users to access real-time weather alerts, cyclone updates, and air quality forecasts via mobile apps.

“Science is not only about research. It is now a core driver of ecological sustainability and economic growth,” said the Minister.

Supporting Agriculture and Fisheries Through Technology

Dr Singh highlighted how the Ministry’s work is benefiting key livelihood sectors. Over seven lakh farmers are currently subscribed to the Meghdoot app, receiving personalized weather-based advisories for their crops.
Additionally, fishermen along the Indian coast use daily SMS updates to locate safe and fuel-efficient fishing zones, thereby saving fuel and improving safety.

Call for Inter-Ministry Collaboration and Public Engagement

Urging for greater coordination between ministries, Dr Singh stressed the importance of collaborative research and outreach. He called upon scientists, institutions, and ministries to increase public awareness and ensure that scientific innovations reach the grassroots level.
