France Declines NATO Plan to Buy US Weapons

Published on

France has reportedly chosen not to participate in a NATO-supported initiative aimed at purchasing American-made weapons for Ukraine. The decision is seen as part of France’s broader push to strengthen its own defense sector and promote European defense independence.

France Prioritizes European Defense Self-Reliance

The NATO-led initiative, designed to streamline the purchase of US weapons to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia, recently saw several allied nations pledge participation. However, France was notably absent from the list presented by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, according to American media outlets.

This move aligns with French President Emmanuel Macron’s long-standing call for a more autonomous European defense framework. Macron has repeatedly encouraged EU countries to invest in domestic arms production and reduce reliance on non-European suppliers, especially from the United States.

US Sends Patriot Missiles to Ukraine via German Cooperation

While France distances itself from the NATO procurement plan, the United States has confirmed the delivery of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. These deliveries are being facilitated through Germany, which is expected to restock its arsenal after the handover.

Russia Warns of Escalation Over Western Weapons

Reacting to the continued influx of Western-supplied long-range weapons, Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of using these systems to attack civilian areas within its borders and to undermine diplomatic efforts.

Moscow has issued fresh warnings, stating that any perceived increase in NATO’s direct military involvement could reshape the conflict and provoke corresponding countermeasures from the Kremlin.
