BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has clarified that the Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana will continue as a separate health coverage scheme for journalists and will not be merged with the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
The clarification provides continuity for journalists already enrolled under the state scheme. Existing beneficiaries will remain covered under the current framework, while journalists seeking fresh enrolment can apply through the prescribed process.
The decision has also been welcomed by the Odisha Union of Journalists (OUJ), which thanked Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for retaining the scheme independently.
Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana to Continue Separately
The state government’s decision means the journalist-focused health insurance scheme will continue independently rather than becoming part of Ayushman Bharat.
Officials have confirmed that journalists who are already beneficiaries will not lose their existing coverage because of the decision. Their medical coverage will continue under the existing arrangement.
For journalists who are not currently enrolled, the government has kept the option of fresh enrolment open through the prescribed application process.

The Odisha Union of Journalists welcomed the government’s decision to retain the scheme independently.
The organisation expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, saying that continuing the scheme separately protects the interests of media professionals.
For existing beneficiaries, the immediate significance of the decision is continuity of their health coverage. Journalists interested in joining the scheme afresh can follow the prescribed process for enrolment.
The scheme will therefore continue independently, with existing beneficiaries remaining covered and fresh applicants able to seek enrolment according to the applicable rules.
