Hindol: A tragic human-wildlife conflict incident unfolded in Hindol, Dhenkanal on Sunday after an elderly woman died following an elephant attack in Barasinga village under the Hindol forest range.

The victim, identified as Bharati Biswal, was a resident of Barasinga village under Balimi police station limits. Her death has once again highlighted the growing danger faced by rural communities living near elephant movement corridors in Odisha.

Hindol Elephant Attack Took Place Near Victim’s Home

According to local reports, Bharati Biswal had stepped into the backyard of her house when a wild elephant suddenly attacked her.

The attack left her critically injured. Family members and local residents immediately rushed her to the Hindol hospital for emergency treatment.

However, doctors declared her dead after she was brought to the hospital.

The sudden nature of the attack triggered panic among villagers, many of whom have repeatedly expressed concerns over frequent elephant movement in the region.

Human-Elephant Conflict Continues to Rise in Odisha

Forest Department officials reached the village soon after receiving information and started an investigation into the incident.

The attack reflects a wider pattern of increasing human-elephant conflict across several districts of Odisha, especially in forest-adjacent villages where shrinking habitats and changing migration routes are pushing elephants closer to human settlements.

The second-order effect is severe for rural communities. Apart from loss of life, repeated elephant movement often damages crops, disrupts livelihoods and creates long-term fear among residents.

Wildlife experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stronger early warning systems, habitat protection and safer village-level response mechanisms to reduce deadly encounters between humans and elephants.

Authorities are yet to confirm whether compensation procedures for the victim’s family have been initiated.
