- A low pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday morning.
- IMD said the system is currently too far to affect Odisha significantly.
- No weather warning or alert has been issued for Odisha so far.
Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Sri Lanka coast, according to the latest update issued by the India Meteorological Department on Sunday morning. However, weather officials clarified that the system is unlikely to have any major impact on Odisha in the immediate future.
The development comes under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Sri Lanka. While such systems are closely monitored during the pre-monsoon season, meteorologists have ruled out any immediate concern for Odisha at this stage.
Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Area Developing Gradually
The IMD stated that the low pressure area formed around 5:30 a.m. over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Meteorological analysis also pointed to multiple upper air cyclonic circulations active across different parts of the region, including over West Madhya Pradesh, southeast Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep and West Rajasthan.
According to weather experts, the current system is expected to intensify gradually over the next 48 hours. However, its present location remains significantly distant from the Odisha coastline.
That distance is critical because weather systems over the Bay of Bengal typically influence Odisha only when they move northward or intensify into deeper depressions closer to the east coast.
Why Odisha Is Not Expected to Face Immediate Impact
The IMD has not issued any cyclone alert, rainfall warning or advisory for Odisha linked to this low pressure system.
Officials indicated that prevailing atmospheric conditions suggest limited direct interaction between the system and Odisha’s weather pattern for now.
The second-order effect of such early-season low pressure systems is often increased public concern due to Odisha’s history with cyclones and coastal storms. However, experts stressed that not every Bay of Bengal disturbance develops into a major weather event for the state.
Weather agencies continue to track the movement and strength of the system because changes in sea surface temperature, wind patterns and atmospheric pressure can alter its trajectory quickly.
IMD to Monitor System Over Next 48 Hours
The IMD said further updates would be issued depending on the system’s movement and intensification in the coming days.
Pre-monsoon systems forming near Sri Lanka and the southern Bay are common during this period and sometimes contribute to changes in rainfall distribution across eastern India later in the season.
For now, Odisha remains outside the direct impact zone, with no immediate threat forecast from the developing weather system.
