Hyderabad: IIT Hyderabad professor Kirti Chandra Sahu has been selected for the prestigious National Awards to Teachers 2026 (NAT 2026) for his contributions to academics, research, innovation and academic leadership.
Prof Kirti Chandra Sahu, from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, is among 21 educators selected for the national award by the Ministry of Education’s Department of Higher Education.
The National Awards to Teachers recognise educators for outstanding contributions to teaching, research, innovation, mentoring and academic leadership.
IIT Hyderabad Professor Kirti Chandra Sahu Selected for NAT 2026
Prof Sahu’s research includes pioneering studies on the shape and size distribution of raindrops at different altitudes.
His work could contribute to more accurate rainfall prediction by improving understanding of how raindrops change as they travel from clouds towards the ground.
The award includes a Silver Medal and a cash prize of Rs 50,000. The award will be presented by the President of India.
Raindrop Research Could Improve Weather Forecasting
Prof Sahu has developed a unique experimental facility from scratch to simulate the atmospheric conditions that raindrops experience while descending from clouds to the ground.
The facility could have applications in weather forecasting and climate modelling, according to IIT Hyderabad.
His research provides an experimental approach to studying raindrop behaviour under different atmospheric conditions.
Prof Kirti Chandra Sahu’s Contribution to IIT Hyderabad
Prof Sahu is a founding faculty member of IIT Hyderabad and has contributed to curriculum development, student mentoring and academic leadership.
IIT Hyderabad congratulated him on the achievement in a post on X, describing his work in teaching and research as a significant contribution to the institute.
His research and academic career have also earned him several other honours.
These include the Young Scientist Award from the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences India and the Indian Academy of Sciences, along with the VASVIK Award.
Prof Sahu Holds Several Prestigious Fellowships
Prof Kirti Chandra Sahu is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Indian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Physics, UK.
He has also received the J. C. Bose Grant, adding to his record of recognition in research and academics.
His selection for NAT 2026 highlights his contributions to teaching, research and academic development at IIT Hyderabad, along with research that has potential applications in rainfall prediction and climate modelling.
