India Highlights Global Leadership in Wetlands Conservation at Ramsar COP15 in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe: At the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, underscored India’s growing leadership in wetlands conservation on the global stage. The COP15 event is being held from July 23 to 31 at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
India Boasts Asia’s Largest Network of Ramsar Sites
Addressing the High-Level Ministerial Segment on “Strengthening Policy and Legal Frameworks by Mainstreaming Wetlands Conservation,” Minister Yadav announced that India now has 91 Ramsar Sites — the largest in Asia and the third-largest globally. He noted that the country has expanded its Ramsar network by 250% over the past decade, reflecting strong national commitment toward biodiversity and water conservation.
Udaipur and Indore Recognised as Wetland Cities
In a first for India, two cities — Udaipur and Indore — have been accredited as Wetland Cities, marking a significant achievement in urban ecological management. This milestone reflects the government’s dedication to safeguarding urban wetlands and promoting sustainable city planning.
India at the Forefront of Wetlands Policy
Minister Yadav reaffirmed India’s proactive stance in shaping and implementing wetlands policy, stating that wetlands are crucial to climate resilience, water security, biodiversity, and livelihood support. He emphasized the importance of mainstreaming wetland conservation into national and urban development policies.
India’s participation at COP15 highlights its role as a key contributor to global environmental governance and showcases its achievements in ecological restoration and sustainable management of natural resources.
