India Successfully Conducts Maiden Flight Tests of Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS)
India has successfully conducted the maiden flight tests of its Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha, marking a significant milestone in the country’s defence capabilities. The test, carried out at 12:30 PM on Saturday, showcased the multi-layered air defence strength of the nation in the face of evolving regional security challenges.
According to the Defence Ministry, the IADWS integrates three major components: the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM), Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), and a high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system.
During the flight tests, the integrated system successfully engaged and destroyed three different aerial targets — including two high-speed fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and a multi-copter drone — at varying ranges and altitudes. The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile systems, drone detection and destruction modules, communication, radars, and command-and-control mechanisms all performed flawlessly.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Armed Forces, and the defence industry for the breakthrough achievement.
“I congratulate the DRDO, Indian armed forces, and the industry for successful development of IADWS. This unique flight test has established the multi-layered air defence capability of our country and is going to strengthen area defence for important facilities against enemy aerial threats,” Singh said on social media.

The Command and Control Centre, developed by DRDO, serves as the nerve hub of IADWS operations, ensuring seamless coordination between missile systems and directed-energy weapons. The VSHORADS and DEW subsystems have been developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) and Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), respectively.
The maiden flight tests were observed by senior DRDO scientists and representatives from the armed forces at the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur (Odisha).
This achievement comes just three-and-a-half months after Operation Sindoor, highlighting India’s rapid advancements in indigenous defence technology and strengthening its preparedness against aerial threats.
