- England secured the T20I series with an emphatic eight-wicket victory in Bristol.
- India have now lost two consecutive T20I series within two weeks.
- India’s batting struggles against short-pitched bowling remained the biggest concern.
BRISTOL/MUMBAI: The India vs England T20I series slipped away from the visitors on Friday after England completed a convincing eight-wicket victory in Bristol to take an unassailable 3-0 lead. The defeat means India have now lost two successive bilateral T20I series in the space of two weeks after previously going three years without losing a series in the format.
With one match remaining in Southampton, India now face the possibility of suffering their first-ever whitewash in a bilateral T20I series if they fail to win the final game.
India vs England T20I Series Exposes Batting Problems
Asked to bat first, India managed only 158/7, a total that proved well below par on a surface where England chased comfortably, reaching the target with nine wickets in hand and 6.1 overs to spare.
The result also extended Shreyas Iyer’s wait for his first victory as India’s T20I captain, while head coach Gautam Gambhir watched another disappointing batting display from the dugout.
Although India entered the tour without several experienced players, the repeated failures suggested a broader issue with adapting to English conditions rather than simply missing key personnel.
Failure to Adapt Becomes India’s Biggest Concern
One of the recurring themes throughout the series has been India’s inability to counter short-pitched bowling.
England’s pace attack, led by Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, consistently targeted Indian batters with short deliveries after identifying their discomfort against extra bounce. Instead of making technical adjustments, India’s batting line-up continued to play with the same approach that has brought success on flatter pitches at home.
The contrast became evident when compared with experienced batters who have previously modified their technique to suit English conditions by getting behind the line of the ball and improving control against bounce.
England Capitalise on India’s Repeated Mistakes
England did not need to introduce major tactical changes during the series. Having recognised India’s struggles against short-pitched bowling early, their bowlers repeatedly attacked the same areas with disciplined execution.
Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also found life difficult against Archer, managing only 18 runs across three matches while being dismissed twice by the England fast bowler.
With the series already decided, India will now look to avoid a 4-0 sweep in Southampton. More importantly, the final match presents an opportunity to demonstrate the adaptability that has been missing throughout the tour, particularly with major international tournaments on the horizon.
