At least six people were killed and 21 wounded in a shooting attack at Jerusalem’s Ramot Junction on Monday morning, sparking Israel to launch a large-scale military operation in the West Bank, according to security officials.
Gunmen Open Fire at Bus Stop
Police said two assailants drove to the busy junction and opened fire on civilians waiting at a bus stop. An armed civilian and a security officer shot back, killing both attackers on the spot. Emergency services rushed the wounded to nearby hospitals, with several reported in critical condition, the Jerusalem Post reported.
In a statement on X, Israeli Police confirmed: “Shooting attack at Ramot Junction in Jerusalem – the terrorists were neutralised, large forces are operating at the scene.”
Israel Launches West Bank Operation
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) deployed four companies and encircled several villages near Ramallah in search of accomplices. Officials confirmed a brigade-level operation under the Menashe Brigade was underway to prevent further attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene after meeting security chiefs. “We are at war against terrorism. The war continues in Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and unfortunately here in Jerusalem,” he said. Netanyahu stressed that while hundreds of terror attacks had been thwarted this year, “unfortunately, not today.”
Leaders Vow Retaliation
Defence Minister Israel Katz denounced the shooting as a “heinous act,” warning of severe consequences: “Just as we defeated Palestinian terrorism in northern Samaria, we will soon do the same in other terror camps.”
No group has formally claimed responsibility. However, Hamas praised the attack as a “natural response to the crimes of the occupation”, while Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) called for escalated operations in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
Escalation Concerns Grow
The attack comes amid a surge in violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank, where Israeli raids have intensified since the Gaza war began. Officials say terror groups are attempting to expand their reach from Gaza into the West Bank, heightening fears of a broader escalation.
Monday’s attack is among the deadliest in Jerusalem in recent months, leaving security forces on high alert across the region as manhunts for additional suspects continue.
